October 8th...

Back in 2002 I was in full Nobody Records/13thTrack.com Halloween Radio/Pumpkinland Studios swing. So much so that a local newspaper writer came over to interview me.
I don't think I've ever posted this so I figured I would...

Daily Review - San Leandro man hums an eerie tune
By Tasha Bartholomew STAFF WRITER

Thursday, October 31, 2002 -

FOR MOST FOLKS, Halloween is the one time of year for tricks and treats, ghosts and goblins, and witches and warlocks. But for Mark Harvey, it's his life's work year-round.
Harvey, owner of San Leandro's independent label Nobody Records and Pumpkinland Studios, wants to make sure that future generations will grow up knowing the same Halloween music he heard as a kid during his favorite holiday.

Harvey, 33, has archived any and all Halloween-related music, sound effects and ghost stories since he was 3 years old, when he received his first copy of Disney's Haunted Mansion album. He then made them available to the world for free from his online radio station at http://www.13thtrack.com/

"This is the only site that offers free Halloween music 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year," Harvey said. "It's a fun way to share my Halloween collection with the world."
Harvey said Internet radio is different from the sites violating copyright laws because the music is streaming. No one can download the music. Harvey keeps the site up and running through a sponsorship from TheHalloweenNetwork.com.

The Web site features Halloween music from different eras and categories including Classics Halloween Radio, a broadcast of fun ghoulish songs from 1930 to 1969; Modern Halloween Radio, a broadcast of creepy songs from 1970 to present day; Instrumental Halloween Radio, a broadcast of eerie soundtracks taken from movies; and a children's broadcast featuring "Charlie Brown's Great Pumpkin" and "Fat Albert's Halloween."

Formative experiences

Harvey's fascination with the holiday began with his own great Halloween experiences as a child, and a visit to Disneyland's Haunted Mansion every year when he was a kid.
"Halloween is a great time of fantasy and frivolity," he said. "How many other times a year can you dress up and be whatever you want to be without anyone looking at you crazy?"
A collector of old vinyl, he is also a musician who decided to record his own Halloween CD three years ago when he moved to San Leandro.
Every year since then -- excluding this Halloween -- Harvey has had a child friendly haunt at his home.

Opportunity discovered

While he was putting things together for the first season, Harvey found that he didn't have any good CDs he could use for the haunt, and was disappointed by the various CDs on the market.
"I wanted creepy music and certain sound effects, but somehow I kept getting screaming and torture and other things that just wouldn't work for a children's event," he said.
That's when he decided to record his own soundtrack. Harvey has recorded a series of CDs called "Pumpkinland" that have been used nationally at theme parks and haunted attractions, including Fremont's own "Pirates of Emerson" haunt. His Halloween music has also been used on Radio Disney during the holiday season.

Leading authority

Harvey has been called the No. 1 authority on Halloween music. He has written for several Halloween magazines, and recently gave a lecture on it at the Global Halloween Convergence in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. That's where he met David Rogers, a prop master for ScreamWorks, a theatrical production company in Cupertino. ScreamWorks uses Harvey's Pumpkinland CDs in its "swamp scene" and "scarecrow alley" at the Conover Mystery Ranch in Hollister.
"His knowledge of the music is incredible," Rogers said. "He's very well respected in the Halloween industry."

For more information on Mark Harvey's online radio station, check out the Web site at http://www.13thtrack.com/ or contact Harvey via email at NobodyRecords@gmail.com.

Tasha Bartholomew covers the city of San Leandro and Ashland.

It is interesting reading this again and thinking back eight years ago. Where I was and where I've been since.

Back then there weren't any Halloween internet radio options and now there are many. I no longer broadcast mostly due to not having the financial resources to. There was a time when 13thTrack.com Halloween Radio had about 24 or so broadcasts. When Live365 started charging a per broadcast fee I reduced it down to 13 broadcasts and then eventually I had to let it all go.

I hope to someday get the broadcasts up and running. I have so much music to share.
Speaking of....I'll end this post with some music...

October 6th...

Greetings and salutations...

Well, six days in and STILL goin' strong. Folks sometimes ask me (and one recently did - a comment on this blog) which Pumpkinland CD is my favorite. My answer - I don't really have a favorite disc. I have a playlist that plays all of the tracks on shuffle and that suits me just fine. (I guess that'd be all of the above?)

I do however have a favorite track. It is track #6 on Pumpkinland III..."Nightmare"...

<a href="http://markharvey.bandcamp.com/track/nightmare-2">Nightmare by Mark Harvey</a>

I'm not quite sure why I like this track so much really...it just feels like classic Halloween music to me. Creepy and otherworldly.

As most of you know all of the Pumpkinland CDs can be heard at 13thTrack.com Halloween Radio (here) and the CDs can be downloaded as well as listened to (here).

Turn off your lights and prepare for your nightmare...

Friday the 13th (repost warning)

Since Friday the 13th is here once again, I thought I would repost this (once again)...
Is Friday the 13th unlucky? I've never thought so. Then again, 13 is my favorite number and I am no Paraskevidekatriaphobic! I read this article as well as heard a lot on my drive into work about the number 12 and how perfect it is and how 13 must be imperfect if 12 is perfect.

This year no one at work said to me, "Well, tomorrow is YOUR day!" which was interesting since every year someone has brought that up. Hmmm... I guess there are OTHER issues on folks minds these days.

Some time ago I found this interesting "info" on the number 13.

A Journey Into The Number 13

In The Great Seal of the United States, which can be found on the back of the dollar bill, the number 13 is used 13 times. The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons: first, he is not afraid of a storm; he is strong and he is smart enough to soar above it. Secondly, he wears no material crown. We had just broken from the King of England. Also, notice the shield is unsupported. This country can now stand on its own. At the top of that shield you have a white bar signifying congress, a unifying factor. We were coming together as one nation. In the Eagle's beak you will read, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," meaning "one nation from many people." Above the Eagle you have thirteen stars representing the thirteen original colonies, and any clouds of misunderstanding rolling away (13 clouds around the stars). Again, we were coming together as one. Notice what the Eagle holds in his talons. He holds an olive branch and arrows. This country wants peace, but we will never be afraid to fight to preserve peace. The Eagle always wants to face the olive branch, but in time of war, his gaze turns toward the arrows.

They say that the number 13 is an unlucky number. This is almost a worldwide belief. You will usually never see a room numbered 13, or any hotels or motels with a 13th floor. But, think about this:13 original colonies, 13 signers of the Declaration of Independence, 13 stripes on our flag, 13 steps on the Pyramid, 13 letters in the Latin word "Annuit Coeptus" above, 13 letters in "E Pluribus Unum", 13 stars above the Eagle, 13 clouds around the stars, 13 plumes of feathers on each span of the Eagle's wing, 13 bars on that shield, 13 leaves on the olive branch, 13 olives on the branch, and if you look closely, 13 arrows. And the number of letters (13 x 3) in the title: "The Coat of Arms of the United States of America".

On Miles Davis's 13th birthday, his parents gave him a trumpet.

Thirteen is the death card in the Tarot deck.

The Friday the 13th club used to meet religiously in obscure places each and every Friday the 13th. The club was to self destruct in accordance with the wishes of it founder on last Friday the 13th in October of 2000. The club was founded in 1936.

Many hotels and apartment buildings do not have a 13th Floor.

People don't like to travel on any given Friday the 13th, and tickets are always easy to get.

13 Bloody Sunday. On January 30, 1972 (Bloody Sunday), 13 unarmed civilians were shot and killed in Belfast when British troops clashed with Roman Catholic demonstrators, causing retaliatory actions by guerrillas in Northern Ireland and demonstrations south of the border.

According to the American Mathematical Monthly, the 13th is more likely to fall on a Friday than on any other day.

In ancient times, Friday the 13th was a sacred and festive day celebrated by women before it was invalidated and condemned by the ancient patriarchy. Thirteen was the number of lunar revolutions in a year, thus a feminine number. And Friday, derived its name from Freyja, the Norse goddess of love and fertility, the Nordic Venus. Thus Friday the 13th was devoted to that goddess.

Napoleon, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin D. Roosevelt all would not dine with 13 at the table.
The most frequent explanation of the superstitions that sitting thirteen at a dinner table may prove unlucky or fatal is that it summons up the ominous memory of the story of Jesus and his twelve apostles at the Last Supper: "Jesus answered them, Have I not chosen you twelve apostles, and one of yours is a devil? He spoke of Judas Iscariot. For he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve" (John 6:70-71)

O.J. Simpson and the number 13. O.J. Simpson and Nicole Simpson were officially divorced on July 13, 1993. Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman each had 13 letters in their names. Their dead bodies were discovered in Brentwood on June 13, 1995.

The British Medical Journal released a study evaluating the number of hospitalizations on Friday the 13th. It found that falls, animal bites, poisonings, and car accidents were more numerous on that date. And the journal found it impossible to say whether the day itself was unlucky or that the psychological weight attached tot hat date made people more susceptible to those accidents.

Negative prophecies, after all, are always goads for dire consequences.
Many believe that 12 is the perfect number. It is often symbolizes totality, perfection, a completion: the twelve signs of the zodiac, the twelve gods of Olympus, the twelve tribes of Israel, the twelve Imams, the twelve Gates of Heaven, the twelve months of the year, the twelve hours of the day, the twelve-tone musical scale, the twelve subatomic building blocks quarks and leptons now believed to constitute all the material world. Into these systems, the number 13 brings a kind of instability, an element of intrusiveness, confusion, un-canniness and disorder.
In the Mo system of Tibetan divination, the number 13 is said to belong to Penden Lhomo, the Tibetan form of the Buddhist goddess Sri Devil, the fierce protectress of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan state. In this system of divination, three dice are thrown, which can result in numbers from 3 to 18. The number 12 is the unluckiest, the number 13 is the most favorable.
There are said to be 13 stages to Buddha hood consisting of ten bodhisattva stages and three additional pre-Buddhist stages.

"M" is the thirteenth letter of the alphabet and it also stands for marijuana.

The 13 House. In 1884, Sarah Winchester, the Winchester Rifle heiress, began constructing of her lifelong obsession, the 160-room Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. Mrs. Winchester, who had lived in New Haven, Connecticut, was deeply upset by the death of her husband and daughter (he from pulmonary tuberculosis, she from marasmus one month after birth), and she consulted a medium. Supposedly the medium explained that the spirits of all those who had been killed by the rifles her manufactured had sought their revenge by taking the lives of her loved ones. Furthermore, these spirits had placed a curse on her and would haunt her forever. But the medium also stated that she could escape the curse by moving west, buying a house, and continually building on it as the spirits directed. In this way, she could escape them and perhaps find the key to eternal life.
One of the most extraordinary features of the house is the role that the number 13 plays in it. A partial list of the 13's in the house include:

13 cement blocks in the Carriage Entrance Hall.
13 Blue and amber stones in the spider web window.
13 bathrooms.
13 panels in the wall by the 13th bathroom
13 windows in the 13th bathroom.
13 steps to the 13th bathroom
13 windows and doors in the old sewing room.
13 hooks in the Séance Room.
13 Ever-Flow drain holes in the Italian Sink.
13 rails by the spy hole in the South Conservatory.
13 steps on the 1st flight to the fourth floor.
13 ceiling panels in the Entrance Hallway.
13 sub-panels in the ballroom ceiling panels.
13 glass cupolas in the greenhouse.
13 holes in the drain-hole cover.
13 gas jets on the Ballroom Chandelier
13 stones in the Oriental Bedroom windows.
13 squares on each side of the Otis Electric Elevator.

On April 13, 1984, the Winchester Mystery House officially celebrated on hundreds years of Mystery, with the help of the Mountain Charlie Chapter No. 1850 of E Campus Vitus, by unveiling a special 100th Anniversary Plaque commemorating Sarah Winchester and the Winchester Mystery House for "100 years of Mystery". At 1300 hours (1:00 P.M.), the bell in Mrs.. Winchester's bell tower was rung 13 times; and at the conclusion of the celebration, 1,300 balloons were released into the air. There are 13 parts to Sarah Winchester's will; her signature appears in it 13 times.

Between June 1962 and January 1964, Albert H. DeSalvo, known as the Boston Strangler, killed 13 women in Boston, Massachusetts. Tried and convicted in 1967, he was murdered in his jail cell.

On the evening of Friday the 13th in January 1995, the iconoclastic artist Ray Johnson jumped from a highway bridge over Sag Harbor Cove in Long Island, New York, and was last seen by two teenage boys backstroking in the freezing waters. Several hours before his death, Johnson checked into a nearby motel and specifically asked for room #247, whose digits add up to 13, as do the digits of the time he was spotted in the water by the two boys, 7:15 p.m., and as do the digits in his age, 67. (The day before his death, Ray Johnson had phoned a friend and told him, "I have a new project, the biggest I've ever undertaken, the most important in my life".)

On September 13, 1993, Yasir Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin shook hands on the White House lawn in Washington D.C., after signing a declaration of agreement on interim Palestinian self-rule.
Agamemnon was murdered by his wife, Clytemnestra, on the 13th of Gamelion (January)
Odysseus, the 13th of his group of companions, is the only one to have escaped the devouring appetite of the Cyclops Polyphemus.
The Amazon Queen Minythyla tried to mate with Alexander the Great during a period of 13 days.
Oenomaus, the father of Hippodamia, killed 13 of her suitors before Pelops won her.
Phillip II of Macedonia was assassinated shortly after he allowed a statue of himself to be erected along with those of the 12 gods of Olympus, making 13 statues in all.
Thirteen is to be considered the age of puberty, and the first transition into "teen-hood".

That 13 brings ill-luck is mere tradition,Yea, even more, it's foolish superstition-For 13, lucky number runs,Through all our Country's ripening suns-Tis for Our Land and omen good-For Peace-Liberty-Brotherhood!
--From Lucky13, a mini-epic written by Maurice Walter in 1919

The 13 American colonies banded together to revolt against England and formed the United States Of America. The Declaration of Independence was signed by 13 representatives, and a flag with the 13 stars was made on January13, 1794. France announced support for the 13 colonies on June 13, 1778.
Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743
The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which declares, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist within the United States." Mississippi was the last of the nine Civil War holdout-states to approve the amendment.

The ill-fated Apollo 13 mission was launched on April 11, 1970, at 13:13 hours Central Time from Pad 39 (13 x 3), and had to be aborted on April 13 after the explosion of an oxygen tank serving the command ship. Three of the sleeping periods scheduled for the astronauts were supposed to start at 13 minutes past the hour, as was the possible splashdown times. The film Apollo 13 grossed $26 million (13 x 2) in its first weekend showings in the United States.

When Princess Margaret was born in Scotland's Glamis Castle on August 21, 1930, palace officials delayed the registration of her birth for three days until another baby was born, so that the princess' registration number wouldn't be 13.
When Queen Elizabeth II paid a visit to West Germany in 1965, the number of the platform at they Duisburg railway station, from which she was about to depart, was changed from 13 to 12A.
When Spanish princess Elena de Bourbon celebrated her marriage on March 18, 1995, to the banker Jaime de Marichalar y Saenz de Tejada, he participated in an old Castilian custom by ritually pouring 13 gold coins into the hands of his bride as a sign that their goods would be held in common. (bienes con juntos)
The French monarch Louis XIII, who declared the number 13 to be his favorite number, married Anna of Austria when she was 13 years old.
The Sun and the Moon are in almost a perfect 13 to 1 ratio. The Sun moves approximately one degree a day, while the moon moves thirteen degrees a day. All of this has made 13 a moon number (13 moons in a lunar year), and 12 a sun number (12 months to a calendar year)
The number 13 bus in London remained unharmed throughout World War II.

So how's about that all you #13 lovers!?!

August 12th!!!

Greetings and sal-mutations everyone!

I am VERY much looking forward to Fall. Last weekend we purchased the first Halloween costume of the season for the baby girl...she's going to be Tinkerbell and my son, Peter Pan. Should be pretty cute. My wife sent me photos via text message last Friday night with Halloween clothes they already had on the racks at Babies R Us. The pumpkin sweatsuit was also picked up along with a Halloween pajama set. As I've blogged about before I enjoy buying the kids clothes to wear during the month of October and I'm hoping this year's offerings are as good as they've been in years past.
...and now...I'm am getting ready to go into full blown Halloween mode. I feel the need to shop and buy all sorts of Halloween things...I'm going to start trolling the stores lurking for Halloween goodies. I did order the Rising Reaper I was looking for last year as it was on sale. I'm hoping it arrives in the next month or so.
So with that...I'll be starting my annual blitz on eBay with some of the Halloween discs I have available for sale. If you don't already own one, pick one up there, at HauntCDs or email me and I can arrange a sale to you that way.

"Within the Haunt Industry there is a large number of companies and individuals producing soundscapes, sound effects and theme music in cd format. The advent of which is one of recent history's most valuable contributions to the industry. Hassle-free sound without the bother of rewinds, broken tapes and distortion caused by wear. Reviewing these products presents a challenge. It is as much a matter of taste as expertise, not dissimilar to trying to compare a heavy metal music track to rap or classical music. What makes a haunt cd good or bad is more the application it is intended for than the product itself. Many well-produced cd's simply will not work in every type of haunt. First a haunter must ask, "What do I want the sound to do?" Is the haunt to be built around a theme that requires a tightly woven sound track to help enhance the storyline? Or, as is often the case, does the haunt need a background soundscape to merely set the tone a haunter desires? If your desire is in the latter category, take a listen to Pumpkinland and Pumpkinland II. The creator of the Pumpkinland cd's does soundscapes and does them well. Built primarily of skillfully layered sound effects, these soundscapes provide a series of background tracks that are eerie, effective and, in some cases very long allowing almost gap-free use. While not as music based as some others, the tracks definitely have a place in the industry. Used in sets such as cemeteries and other outdoor scenes the final tracks of both I and II are superb. Pumpkinland shows it's true strength in mixes that are tailored for the night with wind, weather and animal noises perfectly balanced whether the application is subtle or at full volume. The variety of tracks on each cd does cover multiple types of scenes however, and haunters will find them useful in many other scenarios. Perhaps the only shortcoming of Pumpkinland is the packaging. It tends to portray a more simple and "Halloweenie" product than is hidden within and may unfortunately "put off" some serious haunters. Don't let it fool you, underneath the somewhat mainstream cover is a product sufficiently dark for most applications and far removed from the "scary sounds" cd's found in retail stores that it unfortunately may bring to mind. While the soundscapes of Pumpkinland may not have the recognizability of music-based haunt tracks, nor are they presented in slick packaging, they are well produced and provide yet another valuable tool to the industry. Take the time to visit their web site (Pumpkinland) and listen to the product. It could well be just the thing you've been looking for."
Buy the Fleshrot: Songs from the Dead CD here
The soundtrack to Fleshrot: Tales from the Dead is a companion to the graphic novel. This CD features 13 tracks of music inspired by the book. The music is a combination of edgy and gritty songs and ambient/soundtrack 'HauntScapes' capturing the feel of the art and stories from the pages of the book. Mark Harvey of Nobody Records has written/recorded/produced the album in association with Frightworld Studios. The CD titled Fleshrot: Songs of the Dead is available NOW! Mark Harvey has been writing and recording music for 17 years. He founded Nobody Records in 1987 at age 18 to promote and release his first LP. He opened Pumpkinland Studios to record various solo and band efforts. In 1999 he released his first Halloween 'HauntScape', Pumpkinland, for use in theme parks, haunted attractions and by home haunters. His work includes commercials, custom haunt tracks, soundscapes and sound effects. His work has been heard on radio, television and film.

Now it is time to run away and join the carnival. "Step right up and see the amazing, the unbelievable, the available for your attraction CD, Dark Ride by Rain Station." A journey through a veritable midway of new music written for old pretzel rides. The use of sound effects is limited only to those that help create the feel of the piece. The styles of music range widely from Heavy Metal beats through old time Rock and Roll to the almost cutesy Trick Or Treatin. This nostalgically fun selection, took me back to my early days as a young zombie, heading out on Halloween with the lust for candy in my heart. The CD would be great for line entertainment or a party, with a little bit for every taste and some of the beats are infectious.

Tomorrow is a BIG day...Friday the 13th. Ya'll be safe now...

Music and Spooky Sounds (and shopaholic behavior)

During the month of October I roam the streets and hit nearly every store that might be selling Halloween items. I am a super consumer this time of year buying all sorts of things (junk) that I won't use now, but think that someday I may use, so I buy it (sometimes I do use the things I buy, but my non-Halloweenie house keeps me from going hog wild like I'd like to...a post for another day). Usually on the 30th and 31st I make my final rounds to see what might be on sale and then on November 1st you'll find me doing the same - shopping the 50% off sales at stores. In recent years I've noticed that places are pulling their Halloween wares early. Heck, in mid-October I was seeing Christmas decorations for sale at some places.

Years ago I attempted to get my Halloween CDs into stores and mounted a full assault on the retail industry. I thought that with the Pumpkinland series and Rain Station's DARK RIDE that I had a pretty good chance at getting at least something put into stores. I haunted Spencer's Gifts (Spirit Halloween stores is a division of Spencer's), Target, Wal-Mart, Party City, Party America and every other specialty store that carries Halloween CDs. Yet, I was not ever able to penetrate their wall. I knew that if I could at least get them to listen to the discs that maybe I could get 'em in the stores. It isn't easy when you're competing against Drew's Famous Party Music (here) ( One year I submitted music to Turn Up The Music (the home of Drew's Famous Party Music), but again, nothing), Midnight Syndicate (who are friends of mine) and various other lesser known or unknown vendors who are pumping out sheer garbage on CD. The guys of Midnight Syndicate do an exceptional job of marketing their music and I have complete and utter respect for them not only as businessmen, but as musicians. Their gothic brand of music works well in haunts, in stores or for TV broadcasts. Nox Arcana came along (same vein as Midnight Syndicate) and their CDs are carried by Spirit as well. Joseph Vargo (of Nox Arcana) at one time worked with the Midnight Syndicate guys so you can imagine that their are some similarities to what they're doing.

I've sold tons of my CDs online and have heard from folks saying that they're glad they found my style of haunt music. Much like mainstream (or non-mainstream) music there are many types of discs available to suit all tastes, but with Halloween music the stores are limiting what the public can purchase by assuming what YOU the consumer might enjoy. There's a lot out there and I just wish that some of my discs and the discs of some of my Halloween music friends could make it into party stores so that we could share our music with a larger audience. For now, you folks reading this blog and a few thousand or so others know about us. If anyone reading this knows someone who works as a buyer for storea that sell Halloween CDs, please drop me a line.
Have a listen...Halloween approaches...

Ghouls - a FREE MP3

Here is a FREE MP3 download of Ghouls taken from my Pumpkinland HauntScape. Download the track here.

Enjoy the FREE track and drop me a comment. Remember, all of my CDs are available for purchase at HauntedCDs.com.

Here's what folks are saying about Pumpkinland:
Rue Morgue Magazine
"Musical director Mark Harvey was motivated to kick start a compilation of truly frightening sounds largely out of his disappointment with the usual mix of cackling witches and rattling chains. 'I wanted something dark, eerie, spooky, mysterious and otherworldly,' he writes in the liner notes that accompany this CD. Pumpkinland is his first shot at your nerves, a throbbing soundscape of ambient noises and ghostly synths based around five musical themes (Swamp, Ghouls, The Pumpkin Patch, Creature). A definite atmos-fear is set, more serious in tone than campy or fun. Still, Pumpkinland would probably work best as the aural counterpart to a thrill ride or Halloween haunt (as was intended) rather than an album to listen to in its own."
Halloween-Online.com
"Are you looking for the perfect background music for your Home Haunt? Well, we found it! Pumpkinland Studios created the Pumpkinland Halloween Haunt CD specifically as a soundscape for Home Haunts and Halloween events. It's wonderfully terrifying. Not the lame sound effects disc you get year after year. If you really want to create a spooky atmosphere for your Halloween event this year, get this CD! We love it and highly recommend it!!"
Larry McKenzie HalloweenMagazine.com
"There is no beating around the bush about this CD. If you are looking for a truly spooky Halloween soundscape that you can play during a Halloween Haunt, gathering, or to play for trick-or-treaters, the Pumpkinland CD is one that you should consider. It took a true Halloween enthusiast to come up with this CD. One of my favorite things about the tracks is that each track keeps the theme throughout the entire track. There is no unwanted sound effects that could take away from your haunting experience. Pumpkinland will truly help create a very spooky atmosphere. There are 5 tracks on the CD (long tracks). 1. Pumpkinland (excellent) 2. Creature (excellent) 3. Swamp (excellent) 4. Ghouls (excellent) 5. The Pumpkin Patch (excellent). Each track is done so that there is an almost seamless transition if you use your "repeat function" on your CD player to loop a track for a continuous "theme". The recording quality and recording level is excellent. I am proud to have this CD in my collection. I will use the Pumpkinland CD in my next Haunt. I sincerely recommend visiting http://www.13thtrack.com/ and listen to a track or two."
Happy Halloween Magazine
"Want to set an eerie mood for your Halloween event but tired of screams and sounds of torment? If so, try the hottest new CD this season, "Pumpkinland" from Nobody Records, a Northern California based independent record label. After years of buying the same old tired sound effects, Mark Harvey decided to create a "soundscape of terror". He's compiled some riveting tracks that are dark, eerie, spooky, mysterious and otherworldly. Our personal favorite is the extended final track, The Pumpkin Patch. It aptly recreates the mood for telling ghost stories, yard haunting, touring your favorite cemetery at night...or just having a party!"
Underground Entertainment
"Are you looking for another great soundtrack for your haunt? Mark Harvey, of NOBODY RECORDS, has produced an interesting mix of tracks that should appeal to Haunters in a variety of ways. The CD consists of five extended tracks hell-bent on disturbing your customers. The first three tracks are ominous tunes played with synthesized low-end sounds bound to make your sub woofers rattle! With these, PUMPKINLAND takes advantage of the proven psychological fact that states low-end frequencies can mentally unnerve you. The fourth track is a departure from the style presented through the first half of the CD. This track is a grand piece performed through the sounds of a pipe organ, mixing high and low end sounds, with an occasional added effect (I don't know how to describe it) that will cut straight through you each time it is played. The last track is filled with a mixture of sound effects, including wind, storms, and howling wolves. If you listen closely you can even hear a whisper in the background saying, "Buy UNDERGROUND ENTERTAINMENT." Okay....I made that part up. But, you can use this sound effects track mixed in with a musical track to develop an entire atmosphere for your haunt. Mark Harvey produced this CD after many years of buying Halloween music and sound effects. He wanted to record what he had not been able to purchase. This dark and eerie album would make a great addition to nay haunt CD library."
Underground DJ from Haunted Attraction Magazine
"...Pumpkinland Halloween Haunt CD by Nobody Records. This CD is all synthesizer sound effects and ambient sound textures designed to make your heart quiver like Jell-O. No punk, no hard rock, and no narration, this CD contains only ambient sound sculptures that can be used as the operator sees fit. The CD is wonderfully terrifying with 5 long tracks. The theme of each piece is kept the same throughout the entire track, and there is no unwanted sound effects that could interfere with other sounds you have in your attraction. Each track plays with an almost seamless transition on the "repeat function" of your CD player and the recording level is excellent. This 'soundscape' would be perfect for Halloween events and Home Haunts alike."
Chaotic Order
"From out of nowhere, very spooky, comes this fairly simple soundscape which only differs from many of the others through the CO doorway by including some delectably odd Halloween related samples."
and some words from customers
...around Halloween I ordered Pumpkinland for use on last years haunted houses. Huge success!!! As in movies so to on Halloween. Without sound where is the suspense? Without sound where is the atmosphere? Without sound where is the scare? That CD summed it up and I am looking forward to Pumpkinland II. Halloween planning starts in about three months for us. Keep up the great work, best of luck! TCLOGIC
"Your Halloween mood music is something I have been looking for quite a while. I have been into Halloween and have collected for over 30 years now and I rank it (Pumpkinland) among the best. It made me an instant fan."

"I got your CD from E-Bay a few months ago and I would like to recommend it to anyone if they are looking for something for their Haunt. It is fantastic (Nobody Records Presents: Pumpkinland). I listen to it almost daily. It is the first CD in my stereo and it comes on whenever I turn on the lights in my apartment."

"I've heard the mp3's and absolutely love it!!"

"I want you to know that the Halloween compilation CD (Nobody Records Pumpkinland Halloween Sampler) has been in my 5-CD disc player ever since I received it so I have heard it countless times, and it truly is superb!!!!"

October 13th

Happy October 13th everyone! I dug deep and found this previous post about the number 13 and since I'm pressed for time I thought I'd repost it in an effort to give ya'll something to read regarding my favorite number, 13.

So...Is the number 13 unlucky? I've never thought so. Then again, 13 is my favorite number and I am no Paraskevidekatriaphobic. I read this article as well as heard a lot on my drive into work about the number 12 and how perfect it is and how 13 must be imperfect if 12 is.

Master of Music Macabre

Here's another repost...
An interview I did with Ghoul Skool :

If you haven't heard 13th Track Halloween Radio or listened to the music of Nobody Records then your missing the best part of Halloween. Read along and check out the links as we interview Mark Harvey, the Master of Music Macabre!

Q: The 13th Track is the Premiere Halloween Radio Station. Why Halloween?

A: Halloween is my favorite holiday. For years I would put together mixes of Halloween (and Christmas) music and give it to friends. A sort of music to live your holiday by. As the years went on I started collecting anything and everything Halloween audio related. As my collection grew I decided I wanted to share my collection with a broader audience so I started 13thTrack.com Halloween Radio.

Q: Your collection of Halloween related songs is staggering, how long have you been collecting them? Do you have a favorite find? Is there a favorite song associated with Halloween?

A: I've been collecting Halloween related audio for around 22 years (I'm 34 now). My favorite find is a recent one. I finally located The Munsters LP in excellent condition. This LP features the Munsters theme with lyrics. Of course now that I found one, they've been showing up left and right on eBay. It'd be tough to pick just one favorite song since I've got so many. I'm into the more fun, party side of Halloween music. Music that is good to dance to. Something to get the girls dancing!

Q: You split your record selections for the 13th Track between classics (pre-70s) and modern (post 70s), in your opinion was there a shift in the music at that time? Where do you see Halloween music headed in the future, will it be darker, more Culdee or could there be another "Monster Mash" looming on the horizon?

A: There seems to be a shift from the pre-70s to the post 70s. Music from the 70s fits better with newer music. Music from the 60s and earlier tends to fit together. I've been DJing for many years and figured that 70s and before and 70s and beyond would be the logical place to split the broadcasts. Earlier Halloween music tends to be more whimsical, while newer Halloween music a bit darker (not in all cases). As far as the future of Halloween music? I think musicians will continue to record whatever inspires them. I know there are lots of new whimsical Halloween tunes, but with society getting a bit darker I also feel that Halloween music will emulate what's going on, so it should also get darker.

Really, people record for whoever they think their audience is, even if it is just for themselves. When I record my music I record the music for myself and hope that there is someone out there that can relate to what I'm doing. So far so good. As far as another "Monster Mash" on the horizon, I doubt it. Songs like that one come around once in a lifetime. Of all the emails I get, "Monster Mash" is still the most requested song. I'm still trying to write a song that rivals it. Hopefully someday I'll succeed!

Q: Nobody Records is a unique name, oft times there is a special meaning linking the name to the owner is it so in your case? How long has Nobody Records been in business? Where are you located?

A: Back in the late 80's my band, The Screaming Paisleys, needed a record label name to release our debut LP "EXIT" on. I had a band mascot (if you will) that I called Nobody - a no eyes, nose or mouth doll. I liked the name and it seemed to fit and it has stuck now for 16+ years. The label is located in Northern California near Oakland.

Q: The artists on your label are truly talented, how do you find them or do they find you? Do you solicit material from new acts or do you create them?

A: I've found most of the artists on my label. I do accept unsolicited material and I've signed acts who've submitted demos. Much of what is on my label has some connection to me - either I am the band or part of the band or good friends with the band. My goal is to be able to someday add many more artists to the label and get affiliated with a major label.

Q: Have you been associated with providing music for the dark ride industry? If so, in what fashion?

A: I've created many custom tracks for the dark amusement industry. People from all over the world contact me for specialized tracks. It helps that I am a haunter and dark rider. I understand what it takes to put on a good show. Music, in my opinion, is the least considered, but the most effective aspect of any dark attraction. I like to see floor plans, understand the themes or gag in each space. Then I create a track that immerses the visitor in the desired location. Right now I am working with a dark ride company in the Middle East. Another goal of mine is to work for an amusement company putting together tracks for rides, theme parks and events.

Q: Do you do anything special for Halloween such as parties, haunts or charitable functions?

A: Yes. Each year I put on a haunt for children called "Pumpkinland" (named after my CD series). Children enter free and I collect canned goods or small donations for an entrance fee from the adults. All proceeds benefit the Davis Street Community Center in San Leandro, CA. Last year I wasn't able to put "Pumpkinland" together, but plan on getting it back up and running this October. I've got many new pneumatic props (built by Brent Ross, Devious Concoctions) and look forward to putting on a professional show for the kids this year.

Q: Is there a special Halloween memory that remains with you?

A: Yes. Trick or Treating as a kid. I have many fond memories of combing the hillsides in San Carlos, CA with my friends in search of candy and good scares. It was safe back then to wander around until all hours of the night with your friends. We'd come home with pillow cases full of candy. I also loved carving Jack-O-Lanterns, visiting Half Moon Bay, CA and decorating the house for Halloween. The new fond memories of Halloween include meeting Rob Zombie, Karen Black, Bill Moseley and Alyson Hannigan at Universal Studios. They all did radio spots for 13thTrack.com Halloween Radio and received copies of my Pumpkinland CD and my band, Rain Station's CD, DARK RIDE. I also enjoy visiting local haunts and hearing the tracks I've created for them in action.

And that's it folks...repost du jour...hope you enjoyed it and keep visiting Mark Harvey World each day during the month of October.
